Q: What is the best way to load local EUMETCast HRIT files?

A: Use the Local ADDE servers.

We do have a EUMETCast HRIT data chooser currently under development with EUMETSAT, but for now the best way to view these files is to use the local ADDE servers. By creating a local ADDE dataset, you have the option to choose channel/data type information as well as to loop and subsect the images. The segments are automatically stitched together by the ADDE server.

The local ADDE server requires the Prologue file for each image time (typically following this format: H-000-MSG2__-MSG2________-_________-PRO______-200902110000-__ ), which should be located in the same directory as the HRIT files. Additionally, the files must be decompressed (if the file names end with a "C_" the files are probably compressed). EUMETSAT should be able to supply you with a decompression tool. Other users have had success with this tool - ftp://ftp.itc.nl/pub/venus/xRITDecompress.zip

To create a local ADDE dataset, follow these steps:

1. Go to Tools->Local ADDE from the main menu.
2. Click on File->New Dataset.
3. Enter in a Dataset name, as well as a description for the Image Type. These two values will be listed in the Dataset and Image Type pull down menus in the Satellite->Imagery chooser.
4. Select MSG HRIT FD or MSG HRIT HRV as your format for the Full Disk and High Resolution Visible images. You will need to create two datasets if you want to be able to view both the FD and HRV images.
5. Select a directory.

For more information, see the Local ADDE Data Manager help page at http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/mcidas/doc/mcv ... nager.html

Once you have saved your local ADDE dataset, return to the Satellite->Imagery chooser in the Data Explorer. Select <LOCAL-DATA> from the Server pull down menu. Select the dataset, click Connect, and treat this server just like you would if you were using remote data.
